KAROLINA KACZOROWSKA BECOMES HONORARY PATRON OF RADIO ORLA.FM

Karolina Kaczorowska has agreed to become Anglo-Polish Radio ORLA.fm's first honorary patron.

In this role the wife of the the last Polish President in exile, Ryszard Kaczorowski Honorary GCMG, will be consulted on the future path of the community radio station for Poles living in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

Mrs Karolina Kaczorowska said: "My husband spoke about the positive contribution which Radio ORLA makes to the Polish community in this country where we have lived since the 1940s. We are very pleased that Radio ORLA also extends its programming to English-speaking communities, so that others can learn more about our cherished and proud country, Poland. It gives me great pleasure to accept the role of honorary patron and I wish Radio ORLA great successes."

George Matlock, director of Radio ORLA.fm said: "Honorary patronage is something we have been thinking about for over a year. We planned to offer this role to Mrs Kaczorowska and her husband President Ryszard Kaczorowski at our May 18 birthday. As the world knows, a terrible tragedy at Smolensk in Russia forced us to alter our plans. But we are in awe of Mrs Kaczorowska for being able and willing to accept this role now. Both her and her husband's work for the Polish community, in the post-war government in exile as well as other community work, has enriched us all and indeed made the development of this radio station possible in the United Kingdom."

It is anticipated that Mrs Kaczorowska will attend functions of the radio station. Her role will be ceremonial rather than executive.

Notes to Editors:
Karolina Kaczorowska, as wife of the last Polish President in exile Ryszard Kaczorowski, was the last First Lady in exile 1989-1990.

During the Soviet occupation of Poland in 1939 she was deported, along with her family, to Siberia, Russia. After being released in 1941, the families of serving soldiers were transported to India or Africa. Karolina and her mother spent the remaining years of the war in a Polish settlement in Uganda travelling to England to be re-united with her brother in 1948. Unable to return home to Poland, she and her family settled in the UK. She was active in the exiled Polish Scouting movement, where she met her future husband. Karolina married Ryszard on July 19, 1952. Having started a family she graduated from the University of London and then worked as a schoolteacher. Karolina and Ryszard had 2 daughters, as well as 5 grandchildren.

Ryszard Kaczorowski was attending the Katyn memorial service in Smolensk, Russia in April 2010 when the plane carrying him, the Polish President Lech Kaczynski, and 94 other passengers and crew crashed before landing at Smolensk. The tragedy resulted in early presidential elections in Poland in June and July 2010.

Radio ORLA Ltd is based in London, with a studio at the Hammersmith, Ealing and West London College in Ealing. It has broadcast since May 18, 2006 and is Britain's only Anglo-Polish radio station, serving an audience of more than 100,000 listeners in the UK, Ireland and Poland.
