Centrist Polish presidential candidate Bronislaw Komorowski faces a close-run second round on July 4 after his main opponent, right-wing Jaroslaw Kaczynski put in a strong fight to succeed his late twin brother Lech. At last Sunday's elections pro-business Komorowski secured 41.5 percent of the vote to Kaczynski's 36.5 percent. With a dozen candidates standing, Komorowski was never likely to win outright in the first round with 51 percent. But the margin between the two leading candidates was closer than opinion polls suggested and both politicians face a tough climb to secure victory. Polonia's vote was divided between the two main candidates and demonstrated the overseas vote was a key one. American Poles predominantantly voted for Kaczynski, British Poles for Komorowski. Grzegorz Napieralski, the candidate of the third-biggest party, Democratic Left Alliance (SLD), secured 14 percent of the vote - a larger swing than the 9 percent suggested by recent opinion polls. Napieralski, just like Jaroslaw Kaczynski of the Law & Justice party, was selected after a plane crash in Smolensk claimed the lives of the incumbent president and SLD candidate. Both Komorowski and Kaczynski will be vying to win the backing of Napieralski's supporters to reach the Belvedere Palace, and both rivals will offer elements which appeal to left-wing voters.
