Within hours of the Smolensk air disaster on Saturday morning, the British media was in top gear to cover the saddest European story of recent times, the tragic air crash which claimed Poland's top officials. They were flying to Katyn for the 70th anniversary of the memorial for the victims of Soviet execution, and Poland's youngest intelligentsia as well as veterans of world war 2 were on board the fated TU-154 flight. A diaster that unfolded with characteristic confusion, misreporting by some British media and counter-claims as well as conspiracy theories was always going to be a difficult news story to cover faithfully and responsibly.
But like other British and Polish media, Anglo-Polish Radio ORLA.fm was on the story from the start and working with our colleagues at Hayes FM, the BBC, and Polish Radio in Warsaw, we have stayed on the pulse of this terrible story that none of us would wish to have covered.
That coverage on Saturday began with Reporter Kasia Dudarska on the BBC TV World Service to analyse the immediate community reaction to the disaster in Smolensk. Further BBC calls to Radio ORLA at the Hammersmith Andrzej Boboli church that day with Kasia, as well as strong efforts from other members of the reporting team this weekend, including Ewa and Helena.
