Radio ORLA was saddened to learn of the passing away of two community figureheads in January: Juliusz L. Englert and Andrzej Polniaszek. Juliusz was a very active photographer and writer, but will be best remembered as one of the youngest combatants in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising. Ealing resident Juliusz was also a guest of George Matlock's London Bridge show on Radio ORLA in December 2006, talking about his book on Marshall Jozef Pilsudski. Andrzej was the founder of the Katyn Victims' Families Abroad group and tirelessly campaigned for recognition of Polish servicemen murdered by the Soviet NKVD in 1940. Both London-based Julisz and Andrzej passed away on January 13, 2010.
"I will like to remember Juliusz's raspy wit and indefatigable zest for life when he appeared on the show three years ago. Julisz also contributed to a major programme I did on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising. Andrzej I knew from Katyn memorial day in London, and he briefly appeared in a news item on a Polish proposal to move Katyn memorial from the spring to November," said Radio ORLA director George Matlock.
