Ryszard Rychlicki's London Bridge designLondon Bridge has spanned the River Thames for 800 years but now it has been given a truly 21st century makeover. This radical design is not from artist Kandinsky but from Polish-born Ryszard Rychlicki. The new vision for London Bridge from the Poznan fine arts academy student includes modular steel "shelves" arching over the bridge and was one of the finalists of a competition to mark the 8-century lifetime of bridges at the site. Rychlicki's design came third. The winner of the competition was Briton Laurie Chetwood (see below) whose design came complete with two glass spires and floating mini gardens and beat more than 70 entries to win the contest by the Royal Institute of British Architects.

But it is pie in the sky, or rather pie in the river, because the design is only theoretical. The most recent construction is London Bridge erected in 1973 which is still standing strong. An American collector had the previous version bought and shipped back to the United States - only to find on unpacking he had not bought ornamental Tower Bridge.
