London tube passengers could soon be able to listen to Radio ORLA fm - in the metro underground. A breakthrough when neither FM, AM nor DAB radio can be heard below the surface in London's tunnels.

Along with the perhaps more disturbing innovation of mobile phone reception  in the underground, internet connections are also to be available by 2012 and in time for the Olympic Games in London, the Government has said.

A digital revolution is planned by the Government to make good on cold feet shown by commercial groups who said it was not cost effective. Now the Government is stepping in to find the cash. Motorists would also be given a cash sum to install digital radios in their cars. In the USA, cars already come with Internet radio built into the dashboard.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has made technological advance one of his key policy areas.

"He said the internet was "an essential service, as indispensable as electricity, gas and water" and wants every household to have high speed broadband access.
